Men’s Health Awareness Month

Understanding Men’s Health
A better grasp of the ramifications of men’s health concerns—often overlooked because many of them feel they’re minor and won’t lead to anything serious—may help men lead healthier lifestyles.

Cardiovascular Health
Over 32 million American men suffer from cardiovascular disease, which kills about 450,000 men annually: High blood pressure, stroke, and coronary artery disease (CAD). In the U.S., CAD is the leading cause (almost half a million a year) of men’s deaths. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted and nerve cells begin to die; a medical emergency, call 911 at these warning signs:
  • confusion
  • vision problems
  • severe, unexplained headaches
Both CAD and stroke are commonly caused by atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque in the arteries which can lead to complete blockage. Reduce your risk:
  • make lifestyle and diet changes
  • control cholesterol
  • quit smoking
Prostate Health
Thirty million men suffer from prostate problems. Prostatitis, inflammation that causes pain, may be treated with antibiotics (if bacteria is the known cause), anti-inflammatory agents, or surgery.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate, is a common condition among older men, characterized by irregular urinary symptoms. Three main risk factors are:
  • age greater than 45
  • family history
  • obesity
Early diagnosis can significantly decrease painful symptoms, so it’s important to be watchful and have regular exams. Medications and surgical treatments are available for advanced cases.

According to the Center for Disease Control, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths after lung cancer. Similar to BPH, risk factors include age and family history but diets high in fat and red meat, as well as being African American, also increase risk.

Minor Aches and Pains
Pressure on the body’s bones, muscles, and joints from standing for long periods or constant lifting on the job can be prevented by wearing comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear, and avoiding tasks which put too much stress on the body.

To help prevent aches and pains caused by exercise and physical activities:
  • practice proper stretching before and after
  • wear appropriate clothing and athletic shoes
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about which over-the- counter patches, rubs, cold/hot packs, and oral medications are best for you.

Hair Loss
According to the American Hair Loss Association, 85% of men will significantly lose hair by age 50. Due to genetics in more than 95% of cases, there’s no known health risk, but psychosocial aspects can be overwhelming. Increased levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) shrink hair follicles. Consult with your healthcare provider about cosmetic or pharmaceutical options including shampoos, conditioners, or prescription tablets.
